Cleaning Breakroom Appliances at Work Regularly: Best Methods & Why You Should

cleaning breakroom appliances

Most businesses have a breakroom, where employees can sit down for lunch and other break times. These break rooms typically have a fridge, plus smaller appliances like microwaves and coffee makers. It’s incredibly important for these appliances to be cleaned thoroughly and regularly.  Cleaning breakroom appliances should be regular part of your office cleaning routine.

Cleaning Breakroom Appliances

First, you’ll need cleaning supplies. The average office likely has them. Towles, rags, paper towels, and some sort of disinfectant are a good start. Disinfecting Clorox Wipes is a great product to start with.

You’ll need to begin by cleaning the entire breakroom.  Start at the far end of the room and make your way closer to the door. This way, you won’t clean yourself into a corner, and you have a linear cleaning path. Also, clean top to bottom. Clean higher areas first so any dirt and dust will fall to the floor to be mopped up later.

Next, you’ll be cleaning breakroom appliances.  Dust appliances first to get dirt, dust, and debris off the appliance before going in with a wet cleaner.  Wipe the outside and inside of all breakroom appliances, like the fridge, coffee maker, and microwave.

Take all of the contents out of the breakroom fridge, shelf by shelf. Clean up any messes or spills first, then either spray with a disinfectant and let it sit, or go in with a Clorox wipe. Dry it down with a paper towel and let it air out for a few minutes. Make sure to clean the back and sides as well.

Don’t forget to clean inside the coffee makers when cleaning breakroom appliances. Fill the carafe halfway with equal parts white vinegar and water.  Run a half brew cycle, then halfway through the cycle, turn it off and let it sit for an hour. Then turn it back on and let it finish. Next, dump out the vinegar water and run three more cycles with fresh water to clean it all out.

Don’t forget to clean the crumb tray of the toaster! Wipe down the outside to get dust and crumbs off.

Cleaning Breakroom Appliances:  Why should you?

The breakroom is your employees’ safe haven away from the actual work, where they can relax for a few minutes. Your breakroom should be clean and well-maintained for several reasons.

One reason is employee morale. A clean breakroom will foster pride and respect for the company. Clean breakrooms are easier to navigate and will improve employee mood. Cleaning breakroom appliances regularly will have a positive impact as well.

Thus, it is extremely important for these areas to be cleaned on a regular basis.
